Because I’m so miserable being stuck where I am right now that I think I’d rather die in a ditch homeless in LA or nearabouts because dying homeless in a ditch is frankly better than being stuck here anyway.

You could always move into Detroit. For the same price as that LA ditch you can get a pretty decent apartment.

You could also move somewhere that isn’t a terrible place full of terrible people, congested roads, and totalitarian automotive regulation.

But I may be heavily biased since I tried to come down the PCH on a sunday in August.

What about LA appeals to you? What about your current location do you hate?

California is an expensive place to live. Oregon isn't.

As a California native recently displaced to Detroit Metro...don’t. Living in LA is pretty terrible. Actually, living in California is pretty terrible in general, apart from warm weather.

Lived in DC, hated DC, moved to Manhattan at about age 40. Mostly it has worked. You should live where you think you can get the most accomplished.

And sure - LA means earthquakes, mudslides, wildfires, and droughts. But shit happens. And Manhattan means crowding, living in 1/3 the space I used to, not owning a car, and other inconveniences. But there are great delis, great museums, a big park, and on and on. If LA is where you have to be, you’ll find the good things. Start with Musso & Frank’s .

I would highly recommend securing a job before you head out there (otherwise have a ton of money saved up). The job market in LA is flooded with talent, and many employers out there take advantage of that by lowering the starting wages. The cost of living is expensive out there.

It is not all it is cranked up to be. Sure.... the weather is awesome and there are a lot of cool things to do out there, but good grief it can be tough to get by unless you have a very good paying job.

I know a lot of people out there that want to move out, but are stuck. I know some people that got out and moved to central US cities and are much happier nowadays. I really liked it out there. Met some super people. It’s just for the long term, it wasn’t the place for us to be. If you have the need for warmer weather then look somewhere else if possible. We moved to Florida and really like it down here (it’s not as bad as people on the internet make it out to be).

Good luck!

Only good area is the inner harbor. If it wasn’t for the Aquarium I’d possibly never venture there. The disparity in the quality of life between the city and county is mind-boggling. I couldn’t believe I was still in Baltimore with the nice homes and luscious green scenery that graced my eyes.

And I’m trying to make my way down south. The only good thing about the DC area is the nightlife and the lack of natural disasters. Seriously. Every other region of the country seems to have wild weather and we get spared. No droughts, mudslides, serious blizzards, flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes nor hurricanes. It’s honestly the best perk of the area.

Sadly California has done all it can the past couple decades to negate its many natural benefits. “Go west young man” has basically been replaced by “go south young man” in terms of opportunity.

Pick pretty much any midsize city except maybe New Orleans or Memphis and you’re sure to have a blast. Clearwater/Tampa, Atlanta, Nashville, Columbia, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte...or Dallas, San Antonio, KC or OKC if you don't want the south proper.

Trade show support. Did that for a year for Sun Microsystems early on, prolly knocked 5 years off my life. Nothing like having a gravity center of about 18,000 feet above Denver to find out just how silly it all can get.

Listen, there’s lots of opinions out there about whether LA or wherever is good, cost effective, etc. What you need to choose is whether you need a change or not and it sounds like you do. Why do I support changing? *Because you can **always** change again!* Or go back. Or die. Or something.

Left Colorado (brilliant place to live) and moved to Mpls. Left there for northern CA. Left there for Hawaii. Each time, I left almost everything I’d built, made, etc. to do the new thing, most times without knowing spit about what I’d be doing. None of them were perfect, none of them were permanent, *all* of them were interesting to what I have become. Wouldn’t change a single thing.

Do what you need to do. Sometimes, optimizing for ‘perfect’ gets in the way of learning so you can never move. You’re driving this bus. We’re all just the passengers in the back screaming at you. Smile, and turn if it’s the right thing.

I don’t get all the LA hate. I went out there for my first time 2 years ago and compared to NYC where I am now, it was a dream. Cost of living expensive? Eh I put it on par with NYC except you definitely get more bang for your buck even if it is due to the weather. I don’t know but I loved every minute of it while I was there and visited a shit load of places that were all equally great.

Maybe some people are spoiled by low prices, lack of homeless people, and super friendly people where they live. These are luxuries I don’t have in NYC so Cali was a step up, plus legal bud.

I have been rigging a lot lately but I have had a few weeks at one of the companies on the CNC machine so I will have to see if they bring me in for that on a regular basis. Being at the show most of the time gets tiring, long hours, but then you get into double time so I can’t really complain. I get more time off that way.
